Dinesh Trivedi received criticism from his own party colleagues in Trinamool Congress for the fare hike.

New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday welcomed the fare hike in the Rail Budget, soon after Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi received criticism from his own party colleagues in Trinamool Congress.

Omar Abdullah said people would be happy to pay more if they are provided better services.

"All said and done I'd hate to be in Dinesh Trivedi's shoe's today. Today was supposed to be the highlight of his political career. We take populism to ridiculous levels. I genuinely believe people would happily accept the modest hike if safety & quality of service better," Omar tweeted on Wednesday.

No sooner had Trivedi completed his speech announcing an across-the-board hike in passenger fares, ranging from 5 paise to 30 paise per kilometre, than the TMC, to which he belongs, came put strongly against the fare hike. Senior TMC MPs Sudeep Bandyopadhyay and Derek O' Brien both vented their objections.
