Veteran actress Mumtaz has, on many occasions, spoken about her short-lived romance with the late actor Shammi Kapoor. The two actors met during the shooting of Brahmachari in 1968 and have also been featured together in the iconic song Aajkal tere mere pyaar ke charche. Later, their relationship turned out to be a turning point in Mumtaz’s career. Their love story didn’t last long. In an interview The Times of India, she had earlier said, “The whole world was in love with me and even my male fans were ready to marry me. Actor Shammi Kapoor used to take care of me and loved me a lot, no one will believe this but I and Shammi were in love with each other.”
Now, in a recent interview, she revealed that Raj Kapoor removed her from Mera Naam Joker because he believed she would probably be a part of the family later and come home dressed in short clothes. The clip is going viral on Reddit. In the video, Mumtaz says, “Raj ji mujhe Mera Naam Joker mein liye the lekin phir cut kar diye. Bole ki ‘Tum shayad ghar mein humare ayogi aur hum nahi chahte ki aise chote kapde pehen ke aao’. Isiliye unhone mujhe kaam se nikaal diya. He said, ‘Tumko nahi lunga’.”
Mumtaz, who at the time had an affair with Shammi Kapoor, was dropped from Mera Naam Joker because Raj Kapoor didn’t want a future kapoor bahu wearing “short clothes” onscreen byu/MaalUHave inBollyBlindsNGossip
Shammi Kapoor, in an older interview with Leheren Retro, had spoken about Mumtaz. He had said, “At that time, I was a widower and Mumtaz happened to be a very pretty little girl and for a little short while, we both had dreams and then it turned into a nightmare. I’m happy as I am today.”
Shammi Kapoor and Mumtaz worked together in two films Brahmachari and Vallah Kya Baat Hai. In 1974, Mumtaz married businessman Mayur Madhwani and they have two daughters.
