The Malayalam movie Manjummel Boys hit the silver screen on February 22 and has been receiving much love from Tamil Nadu. The movie has been a huge success at the box office.

One of the possible reasons for this might be the connection between Kamal Haasan’s 1991 psychological drama Gunaa movie because of the addition of the song Kanmani Anbodu Valantha which the Tamil audience could relate to. The movie has been receiving much appreciation from critics and viewers alike for its technical aspects, acting, script and direction. Recently, the team met Kamal Haasan and the director called it the “climax of Manjummel Boys”.

On February 28, Kamal Haasan met the team of Manjummel Boys in Chennai at his office. He interacted with the director and the cast and also shared his thoughts about the movie. He also clicked a photo with the team. He captioned it sweetly and wrote, “And here comes the climax of Manjummel Boys.”

Talking about his experience of meeting with Kamal Haasan, director Chidambara S Poduval in an interview with Filmibeat called it an “unbelievable moment”. He further shared, “There’s no ‘Manjummel Boys’ without Kamal Haasan or ‘Guna’. This is the biggest victory for the film.” He was filled with gratitude for the Tamil audience for showering his movie with love. The director shared that the support from Tamil Nadu is “more than Kerala” and “brilliant”. While he does have the support of Kerala, he loves the energy in Tamil Nadu. He shared that he would watch the movie with the people here.

In a press release before the Manjummel Boys hit the theatres, Chidambaram shared that he is a huge Kamal Haasan fan. He called the actor a “brilliant director” and shared that the superstar’s Virumaandi has influenced him a lot. He lauded the efforts made in making Gunaa back in 1991. He said, “Today there are many technologies like LED lights and lightweight batteries. Hence, filmmaking has become easier. Even so, we could not shoot there. I don’t know how he (Kamal) took the big light and generator in the 80s at such a height and carried so many people. That too, not for one or two scenes, but many scenes including a song.”

Manjummel Boys is written and directed by Chidambaram S Poduval. The survival drama is centred around the real events of the 2006 incident at Kodaikanal Guna Cave. It stars Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese, Ganapathi S. Poduval, Lal Jr., Deepak Parambol, Abhiram Radhakrishnan, Arun Kurian, Khalid Rahman, Chandu Salimkumar and Vishnu Reghu.
