NEW DELHI: Mounting pressure on the Centre, Congress MPs and MLAs from Telangana today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and told him that they would not be able to continue in their posts for long if a "positive decision" on the statehood issue is not taken at the earliest. The MPs, MLAs and two Andhra Pradesh ministers met Singh at his 7, Race Course Road residence here and demanded that the Centre sticks to its December 9, 2009 statement that steps would be initiated for the formation of a separate Telangana state. After the 45-minute meeting, senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP K Keshav Rao said they briefed Singh about the situation in the Telangana region and the sentiments involved in the formation of the state."We made it clear to the prime minister that we would not be able to continue in our posts if a positive decision on Telangana is not made soon," he told reporters after the meeting. However, Rao said the party lawmakers understand that the decision has to be taken after discussions, but stressed that the decision should be taken at the earliest.Rao said they would wait till June 15 when Congress Core Group is expected to discuss the contentious Telangana statehood demand. The Centre had on December 9, 2009 announced it would initiate steps for the formation of Telangana state, but made amendments to its announcement on December 23 saying there was a need for wide-ranging consultations on the issue. Then, the Centre appointed Justice B N Srikrishna Committee which suggested six options to solve the issue. But the Telangana Congress MPs and MLAs have been demanding that they will not agree anything short of a separate state.
