New Delhi: Reacting to the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal’s decision to award Karnataka with 270 tmc feet of the river water, advocate for the state on Cauvery, Mohan Katarki said that "the decision is good in parts."
"Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal’s decision is good in part. Karnataka will decide on the future course of action after going through the full copy of reports," Katarki confirmed.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka Ryat Sangha has termed the decision "unfair."
The Sangha said that they would seek legal redressal against the Cauvery verdict along with non-violent protests.
According to them what Karnataka has got is lesser than what it should have got. Reports indicate that the state was planning to allot a large area under irrigation but the tribunal’s verdict seems to go against these plans now.
Speaking to CNN-IBN after the verdict came out, former Karnataka Minister M C Naniah said, “The issue was pending for a very long time. This decision is certainly not in favour of Karnataka. Karnataka is fair with this issue but fair distribution has not been done.”
Naniah asserted that the decision “is not in favour of the people of Karnataka and the farmers.”
He said that a review petition will be filed soon. “Two days before Chief Minister had a meeting with all political parties and it will make sure that justice is done to the people of Karnataka. I can assure you there is not going to be any untoward incidence in Karnakata with regard to this verdict because we will wait for the final justice.”
However, senior advocate and member of the Counsel for Karnataka, Fali S Nariman believes that the decision is “satisfactory for all parties and the Tribunal has done enormous work.”
Meanwhile, S Ranganathan from TNCD Farmers’ Association said that the figure is “misplaced and one should wait for the final report.”
He explained that the Tribunal has tried to balance it but the final judgment is yet to come. “Actual release by Karnataka to Tamil Nadu is not 419. It is much less than that. Tribunal tried to do some balancing act but to come to any conclusion we have to wait and watch,” he said.
