A five-year-old girl suffered severe injuries in an attack by two Rottweiler dogs at a public park in Chennai’s Thousand Lights area on Monday night. Police arrested the owner of the dogs and a case of negligence has been registered.

Investigators said that the owner had let the dogs loose in the park and when they attacked the girl, he did not intervene until her parents rushed to her aid and raised an alarm, an NDTV report said. The girl’s father works as a security guard at the park.

“We have arrested the owner and registered a case against two others who take care of the dogs,” senior police officer Shekhar Deshmukh was quoted by NDTV as saying.

The girl, identified as Sudaksha, is receiving treatment at a private hospital. Police sources said the dog owner had not sterilised the Rottweilers.

On April 29, a 6-year-old girl was attacked by a German Shepherd — despite being on a leash, in Ajnara Integrity Society in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad.

CCTV footage of the incident showed the owner falling down in a bid to restrain the dog, which bit the girl on her arm. The kid’s mother immediately ran towards her and called for the security guard’s assistance.

In March, the central government had directed states to ban the sale and breeding of 23 breeds of ferocious dogs, including Pitbull Terrier, American Bulldog, Rottweiler and Mastiffs, amid rising instances of people dying due to dog attacks.

The directive had added that those who already have these breeds as pets must sterilise them at once.
