THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The handicrafts exhibition organised by the Artisans’ Development Corporation on the Institution of Engineers campus, Vellayambalam, delights consumers with bamboo products.The one-metre bamboo stick which can produce the sound of the rain, called ‘rain maker’, is the main attraction among the bamboo products. The bamboo, which is polished and painted in beautiful designs, is filled with fried green gram and ‘manjadi’ seeds to produce the sound of rain. The rain maker is made by the Bamboo Crafts Society working under the Malankara Social Service Society. The cost of the ‘rain maker’ is Rs 350 per piece.“The rain sound will energise our brain and it helps to reduce tension and stress. It can be also used as an equipment for the exercise of hands,” says S Vincent, who sells the bamboo product at the exhibition. There are also many other bamboo products which catch the visitors’ eye like lamp shades in different designs, spoons, flower vase, pots, pen stands, pens, plates, cups, trays, photo frames, telephone stands and clocks. All the products are produced by the craftsmen working under the Malankara Social Service Society at Kattakkada. The Kattakkada unit contains 30 members and five permanent staff members. The society is also working in Vattiyoorkavu and Anayara. “The curtains and lamp shades that are made out of bamboo are gorgeous. The exhibition is a good place to buy new things when Onam is at our doorstep,” says Kavitha V S, an advocate at Vanchiyoor court. The exhibition, inaugurated by K Muraleedharan MLA, also displays Rajasthani show pieces, Assam wood items, accessories from Mysore and Chennai, dress materials from Kashmir, paintings from Haryana and indigenous items like pickles and wines from ‘Seva,’ a women’s society based in Kerala. The festival is on from 10 am to 8 pm.
